Waste = food! Composting is an easy and effective way to reduce household waste while producing rich organic fertilizer that can be used in your home or community garden.

This interactive workshop will include what to compost, what not to compost, different kinds of composts and how to get started, different stages of composting, and tips/tricks! Have questions about how to get started or want help troubleshooting? Bring your burning questions and curiosities to this workshop and ask away!

Come by the demonstration between 12-2pm on Wednesday July 21st at the SFU Pocket Farmers Market.

Pre-registration is not required, but recommended so you will receive a reminder email prior to the workshop.

About the facilitator: Matthew Kemshaw has worked in the field of Urban Agriculture for several years and has been mentored by some of the Pacific Northwest's most respected community gardeners. His experience includes working with dozens of schools to strengthen or create their own schoolyard food garden, growing thousands of vegetable seedlings for giveaway in low income neighborhoods of Vancouver, working with Parks Victoria to develop Food Forests on city land, maintaining several community gardens in both Victoria and Vancouver, and designing and implementing horticultural therapy programs with the elderly and people suffering from addictions and/or mental health issues. Matthew has an incredible amount of passion and vision for urban agriculture in Western Canada.

This workshop is part of the Urban Agricultural Skills Training Workshop Series, generously supported by Vancity.

SFU Local Food Project

The Urban Agricultural Skills Training Program is a workshop series designed to equip SFU students and community members with the skills to produce, preserve, and prepare their own food. Participants will engage in discussions of our food systems both locally and globally and gain tools to create change in their own lives and communities.

The SFU Local Food Project is a campus based organization that aims to increase the amount of local food available on campus, create awareness of the benefits of local food, and encourage and support alternative food production and distribution systems on campus.
